BANKING Turn 1 14 degrees, Turn 2, 8 degrees, Turn 3, 6 Degrees

Aug 4th, 1:00PM ET on ESPN TV

Is this a road course, a flat track, or a tri-oval? How about all of the above? Only 3 turns, yet each one is banked slightly differently. When you attend this race in this spectacular part of the country, it is like watching a road course because you can’t really see every turn on the track. We have seen 12 different drivers win here in the last ten years. Those 12 drivers come from six different teams. Three teams have 75% of those wins. Hendrick Motorsports has the most wins in the last ten years, with six – three wins each from Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. They also have the two most recent victories here. Joe Gibbs Racing has five wins in the last ten years – one from Joey Logano and four from Denny Hamlin. Roush/Fenway Racing has four wins in the last ten years. Will Hendrick Motorsports domination continue? We’ll know on Sunday.

Tuesday look for our top 10 drivers on flat tracks. Thursday we rank the top 30 drivers for Sunday’s race.

TOP 5 DRIVERS

BRICKYARD 400 at the INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

The #5 driver to watch is tied as the winning-est driver here, #24 Jeff Gordon. Jeff has 19 starts, four wins and 11 Top 5’s. Jeff drives a Chevy which has won here the last ten years in a row and GM has won 15 of the 19 races run here. Jeff, who is facing the prospect of missing The Chase this year, comes in as the 15th hottest driver over the last 6 weeks, and is rated #2 on flat tracks.

My #4 pick is an Indiana native and current resident, #14 Tony Stewart. Tony comes in pretty confident because in his 14 Brickyard starts he has two wins and six Top 5’s. Eight of his last nine starts have been Top 10’s!

My #3 pick has five straight Top 10 finishes at the Brickyard, #16 Greg Biffle. Greg has ten starts and three Top 5’s, and those Top 5’s came in the last four years, his 3M Fusion is just getting better here.

My #2 pick is #2 hottest over the last six weeks, #29 Kevin Harvick. Kevin has 12 starts, one win and four Top 5 finishes.

He is very happy to be here where Chevys have done well and keep in mind Kevin likes the tracks without much banking. He is #3 rated for me on this type of track.

My #1 pick is tied with teammate Jeff Gordon for winning-est driver, #48 Jimmie Johnson.  Jimmie has 11 starts here and four wins. Four out of 11 is pretty strong! The funny thing is, he has three other finishes 36 or worse. Jimmie is the defending champion of this race, coming in first here last year. He’s also the #1 flat track driver, #1 in points AND #1 hottest over the last six weeks.

CROWN ROYAL 400

INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

JULY 28th, 1PM ET on ESPN TV

2.5 MILES 9 Degrees of Banking

Races have taken place here since 1911 -everything from automobiles to hot air balloons- but it was a momentous occasion in 1993 when NASCAR went and tested here. It was an even bigger moment in 1994 when they dropped the green flag at the Brickyard 400. It was very interesting to say the least to see stock cars on the track where every Memorial Day since I can remember I watched the best open wheel drivers in the world compete. They may not go as fast as the open wheel cars, but they are every bit as impressive. 2.5 miles in stock car racing is a LONG way and when you have two very long straightaways followed by turns, you HAVE to get whoa’ed up because you have very little banking in the turns. This is a big track that makes tempers very short. In the 19 races here Chevrolet or GM cars have won 15. Jeff Gordon and his teammate Jimmie Johnson have four each of those wins. Ford hasn’t found Victory Lane since 1999, Toyota has never won here. Can Chevy make it 11 straight? We’ll find out on Sunday.

Thursday look for our top 10 drivers on flat tracks in advance of the Crown Royal 400 from Indianapolis.

TOP 5 DRIVERS

NEW HAMPSHIRE MOTOR SPEEDWAY

The #5 pick is #1 hottest driver over the last six weeks, #15 Clint Bowyer. Clint has not only been hot at the last six races of this year, in his last six stops in The Granite State he has finished in the Top 5 three times.

The #4 pick is a three-time winner at the Magic Mile, #14 Tony Stewart. Tony has 28 starts, three wins and 14 Top 5 finishes. Tony has been on a hot streak here – three of his last six races were second place or better. He is #4 hottest over the last six weeks and because he sits 10th in points he NEEDS  a big finish.

My #3 driver has struggled here over the years, #29 Kevin Harvick. Kevin has 24 starts, a win here early in 2006 and has six total career Top 5’s. Good stats but not great. But, he is rated #3 for me on flat tracks and is #2 hottest over the last six weeks.

My #2 driver is rated #1 for me on the flat tracks, #48 Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie has 22 starts, three wins, and nine Top 5’s. Jimmie last won this race in 2010 and has six Top 5’s in his last 12 starts. Keep in mind Jimmie is #3 hottest over the last six weeks.

My #1 pick is still fighting hard to make the Chase, #24 Jeff Gordon. Jeff has 36 starts, three wins, and 16 Top 5’s. His last win came in 1998 but his recent stats here are still impressive. Jeff’s last 15 races at the Magic Mile were all Top 15’s and seven of those 15 were Top 5’s. He has the #1 Best Average Finish but sits 14th in points. If desperation makes inspiration Jeff should have a Top finish here in the granite planet.
