TOP FIVE DRIVERS TO WATCH

APACHE WARRIOR 400

My #5 driver got his first Cup start here, #20 Matt Kenseth. Matt comes into the First State with 36 starts, three wins and 17 Top 5’s. Matt is rated #5 on tracks like this. Matt’s most recent win came here in the spring race last year. His back is up against the wall and he needs a great race and one thing Matt does better than most is deliver great results.

The #4 pick doesn’t have many starts here, #24 Chase Elliott. Chase comes into the Monster Mile with just three starts, no wins and three Top 5’s – 100%! Chase is #9 hottest over the last six weeks and if he wants to remain in the playoffs he needs to turn up the heat. Since his team Hendrick Motorsports have won 45% of the races here in the last 10 years and their motor shop has won 55% there is nowhere better than here.

My #3 driver is an eleven-time former winner and most recent winner here, #48 Jimmie Johnson. Here at Dover Jimmie has eleven wins in just 31 starts and 16 Top 5’s including the win in June. He has eight wins in his last 17 starts. He has the #1 highest average finish. But he is #12 hottest over the last six weeks.

My #2 driver is the hottest driver right now, #42 Kyle Larson. Kyle has seven starts at the Monster Mile, no wins and three Top 5’s. He finished  second here in June and second in the early race last year. Kyle is #1 hottest over the last six races.

The #1 pick is the defending champion here at the Monster Mile, #78 Martin Truex Jr. Here at the Monster Mile Martin seems to have finally figured out the code to beat the Monster. Martin is the defending winner of this race getting a win last year that locked him into the next round of Chase races. He got that win in 23 starts with just three Top 5’s. That win in this race last year and his third place finish in June are two of the Top 5’s. He is #1 rated for me on the intermediate tracks and is #3 hottest over the last six weeks.

1 mile, 24 Degrees of Banking

PLAYOFF RACE #3

Coming out of the New Hampshire Motor Speedway –known as the Magic Mile- it is hard to maintain that same level of excitement, but the Monster Mile at Dover comes pretty close. The banking is high and the sight lines are amazing. Take the 12 degrees of banking at New Hampshire and double it to 24 degrees. Just about wherever you sit you have a great view of the track. There is never a dull moment at the Monster Mile and the drama surrounding the Chase only adds to it. This year, for the third time, we have the elimination element – after this race four of the sixteen drivers will be eliminated based on the last three races. Martin Truex and Kyle Busch are locked in with wins at Chicago and New Hampshire. That leaves just ten slots in next round of the Chase. Something to keep in mind here at Dover: Hendrick Motorsports has won nine races here in the past ten years (45%) including five of the last eight races. If you look at the Hendrick Motor Shop that is 11 wins in the last ten years (55%). Earlier in the year Jimmie Johnson got his 11th win here driving for HMS. Very few of the sixteen Chase drivers are completely safe from elimination. A win gets you in, so will this race be won in a late race restart? We’ll find out Sunday.

Tuesday look for our Top 10 Drivers by track type for Sunday’s APACHE WARRIOR 400 from Dover.

ISM CONNECT 300

My #5 driver is a two-time former-winner here, #18 Kyle Busch. Kyle has 25 starts, two wins and nine total Top 5’s. His last win was the early race in 2015. He is #3 hottest over the last six weeks. Kyle finished 3rd in this race last year.

The #4 pick has been very consistent here, #2 Brad Keselowski. Brad has 16 starts here with one win and six Top 5’s. He has 12 straight Top 15 finishes, is ranked #2 for me on flat tracks and is #10 hottest over the last six weeks. He is also #2 here in average finish.

My #3 driver has horrible stats here, #78 Martin Truex Jr. Martin has 22 starts, no wins and just five Top 5’s. Not great but he has the most wins so far this year, he leads in points and is #1 hottest over the last six races.

The #2 pick is #1 in average finish here, #20 Matt Kenseth. Matt comes into the Granite Planet with 35 starts, three wins and 11 Top 5 finishes. He is #3 rated on flat tracks and his last four races were all Top 5’s including two wins. A major reason he is #1 in average finish.

My #1 pick is the defending champion of this race, #4 Kevin Harvick. Kevin has finished five of the last six races here in the Top 5. Kevin has 33 starts, two wins and ten Top 5’s. He is ranked #1 on flat tracks and is #5 hottest over the last six weeks.
