1 Mile, 24 Degrees of Banking

Race #11 of the year takes us to the “concrete jungle” Dover Int Speedway, AKA the Monster Mile. I love this track! The banking is high and the site lines are amazing. Just about wherever you sit you have a great view of the track. In the last ten years one team has dominated here, Hendrick Motorsports. They have nine wins, eight by Jimmie Johnson alone. The second highest number of wins in the last 20 races is Joe Gibbs Racing with four, the most recent from Kyle Busch in the fall race last year. Will Hendrick Motorsports maintain their domination? Or will another team take a victory? We’ll find out Sunday.

Tuesday look for our Top 10 teams and Thursday look for our Top 30 driver rankings for Dover.

TOP FIVE DRIVERS

GEICO 500 from TALLADEGA

The number 5 driver is a former winner here in ‘dega, #11 Denny Hamlin. Denny has 24 starts, one win and six Top 5’s. Denny is the #1 rated restrictor plate driver. He has had a tough start to the season but he has turned that around with a 3rd place in Richmond. He sits sixth in points.

My #4 driver is a two time winner here, #22 Joey Logano. Joey has 18 starts, the two wins and five Top 5’s. He comes in here second in points, and #3 hottest over the last six weeks. Most importantly he is my #4 rated plate track driver and very happy to be here where Team Penske have won four of the last five races.

My #3 driver is the #1 hottest driver at the moment, #18 Kyle Busch. Kyle is the #1 point getter over the last six weeks and he just won three straight races now he is rolling into a track where swagger is everything. Kyle has 25 starts, a win and  six Top 5’s. He finished 3rd here last year.

My #2 driver to watch has never won here, #41 Kurt Busch. Kurt has 34 starts and seven Top 5’s. He is 5th hottest over the last six races. He has is also my #2 rated plate track driver. Stewart Haas Racing right now is my #1 rated team pound for pound round for round they have the strongest most consistent driver line up. Of the four I like Kurt but watch out for all four drivers.

My #1 pick got his very first win here, #2 Brad Keselowski. In 18 starts Brad has won here five times, his first win in spring 2009, spring 2012, fall 2014, spring 2016 and his last win in the Playoffs last year. He is 5th in points and 6th hottest over the last six weeks. Look for the #2 car to come alive in Bama and go for the six pack!

RACE PREVIEW

GEICO 500
TALLADEGA SUPERSPEEDWAY
APRIL 29th, 2 PM CHARLOTTE TIME FOX TV
2.66 MILES, 33 Degrees of Banking

This is race ten and the 2nd restrictor plate race of the year. A restrictor plate regulates how much air gets into an engine and therefore restricts or limits how fast it can go. They are only used at two tracks: here at Talladega and at Daytona. Drivers fear these races as they force them to run very close together because the speeds are limited. This is the biggest oval track on the circuit and that often times leads to the biggest wrecks at any track. Drivers (and fans) are all waiting for “the big one” – a wreck that can sometimes take anywhere from one car to half of the field out. When the cars get bunched up like they do here it only takes one car getting loose to start a huge chain reaction pile up. We are only nine races into the season and no one wants to get caught up in someone else’s mistake or misfortune. Many times drivers who know each other will move thru traffic on the track together nose to tail – “drafting” – and with the season just beginning, it will be interesting to see if old alliances stay intact or if new ones are formed due to team loyalties or drivers wanting to hook up with others they think can take them farther. For the second year we have a new twist, stage racing: stage one is 55 laps, stage two 55 laps and the last 78 laps. Ford  has won nine of the last 20 races here, including the last five. Team Penske has six of those wins and Rousch Fenway Racing has three of them. Will Ford dominance continue? We’ll know on Sunday.

Tuesday look for our Top 10 drivers on plate tracks in advance of the Geico 500 from Talladega.

TOP FIVE DRIVERS

TOYOTA OWNERS 400 from RICHMOND

The #5 driver has not exactly dominated here, #2 Brad Keselowski. Brad did get a win here in September of 2014, but hasn’t been great in Richmond – he only has four Top 5’s in 17 starts. Brad has not won yet this year but quietly sits 5th in points and is #4 hottest over the last six weeks. He did finish second here in this race last year.

My #4 driver is the hometown hero here, #11 Denny Hamlin. Denny grew up not from here.  He is also one of the current winning-est drivers here with three career wins. He has 23 starts those wins and ten Top 5’s, speaking of Top 5’s, his last three starts were all Top 5’s including his latest win in the September race in 2016. Denny is also my #4 ranked short track driver.

My #3 driver to watch is another three time winner here, #4 Kevin Harvick. Kevin has 34 starts, three wins, and 12 Top 5’s. Kevin last won here in this race in 2013. That is ten races ago, in that time Kevin finished in the Top 5 six times and every one of those ten races was Top 15 or better.

My #2 driver to watch is the hottest driver on the circuit, #18 Kyle Busch. Kyle has 18 starts, two wins, and seven Top 5 finishes. He is #1 hottest over the last six weeks and he also sits #1 in points. He just won in Bristol so we know he is a pretty good short track driver.

The #1 driver to watch is my #3 rated short track driver, but has yet to win a race this season, #22 Joey Logano. Joey comes as the defending champion of this race.  Joey has two wins in 18 starts and seven Top 5’s. His last eight races here have all been Top 10’s and six were Top 5’s including both of his wins.

Monday we’ll preview the Geico 500 from Talladega.
