TOP 5 DRIVERS TO WATCH

AAA 400

The #5 pick is a four-time winner here at the Monster Mile #24 Jeff Gordon. He needs to have all Top 5’s for the rest of the season to have a shot at the Championship. Jeff’s last Top 5 at this track was in early 2008 and his last win was in early 2001.

My #4 driver is the #1 hottest driver over the last six weeks, #11 Denny Hamlin. Denny will need to bring the heat here where he has 13 starts, no wins and just three Top 5’s. But Denny has been “Mr. Over Performance” at many tracks this year as his new crew chief, Darian Grubb, has helped him a great deal at tracks he has struggled at.

My #3 driver is yet another who has struggled here in the past, #29 Kevin Harvick. In 23 Monster Mile starts Kevin has never won and has just three Top 5’s. But four of his last five races have been top 10’s and Kevin finished second here in June.

The #2 pick won here in May of last year, #17 Matt Kenseth. Matt comes into the Monster Mile with 27 starts, two wins and 13 Top 5’s. Matt is ranked #1 on these intermediate tracks and eight of his last nine races here were Top 5’s.

My #1 driver is a seven-time former winner, #48 Jimmie Johnson. Here at Dover Jimmie has seven wins in just 21 starts and 10 Top 5’s. He has four wins in his last seven starts including a win here in June! Jimmie just took the #1 place in the Chase and here in the first state he shouldn’t be giving up the first position.

RACE PREVIEW

DOVER INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY

AAA 400

September 30th 1PM ESPN TV

1 mile, 24 Degrees of Banking

Coming out of the New Hampshire Motor Speedway –known as the Magic Mile- it is hard to maintain that same level of excitement, but the Monster Mile at Dover comes pretty close. The banking is high and the sight lines are amazing. Take the 12 degrees of banking at New Hampshire and double it to 24 degrees. Just about wherever you sit you have a great view of the track. Something to keep in mind here at Dover: Hendrick Motorsports has won six races here in the past 10 years, including the race last June which was won by Jimmie Johnson. Another owner with 6 race wins in the last 10 years is Roush/Fenway who won here early last year with Matt Kenseth. There is never a dull moment at the Monster Mile and the drama surrounding the Chase only adds to it.  With Hendrick Motorsports and Roush/Fenway tied with 6 wins each in the last 10 years can one get the win and dominate the “Monster”? We’ll find out on Sunday.

Tuesday look for our Top 10 Drivers by track type for Sunday’s AAA 400 from Dover.

TOP 5 DRIVERS TO WATCH

NEW HAMPSHIRE MOTOR SPEEDWAY SYLVANIA 300

The #5 pick is the #1 hottest driver over the last six weeks, #2 Brad Keselowski. Brad has six starts here with no wins and just two Top 5’s. He is ranked 19th for me on flat tracks, but he is our points leader, #1 hottest over the last six weeks and he has shown consistent and considerable improvement at EVERY track so far this year. Also keep in mind his two Top 5’s came in his last two races here.

The #4 pick is a two-time former-winner, #15 Clint Bowyer. Clint comes into the Granite Planet with 13 starts, two wins and three Top 5 finishes. More importantly four of his last six races here were Top 10 or better.

My #3 pick is a three-time former-winner here, #24 Jeff Gordon. Jeff has 35 starts, three wins and 15 Top 5’s here. If Jeff and his team are thinking about a 5th Championship they need to get all Top 5’s for the rest of the year. Here in New Hampshire Jeff has the #1 highest average finish and 14 straight Top 15 finishes.

My #2 driver is rated #1 for me on the flat tracks, #48 Jimmie Johnson. Many people including me have Jimmie pegged as the man to beat in the Chase – remember he doesn’t have to win every race-just get the most Top 5’s. Jimmie has 21 starts, three wins, and eight total Top 5’s. Jimmie has nine Top 10’s in his last 11 starts here and 5 of those were Top 5’s.

My #1 driver has the #2 highest average finish at the Magic Mile, #11 Denny Hamlin. Denny has just 13 starts but he did win here early in 2007 and has seven total Top 5’s. Back in June he finished in second place.

Monday we’ll preview the AAA 400 from Dover.
