.5 MILES 12 DEGREES of BANKING

Spring short track race #1. Like Bristol Motor Speedway, this is a half-mile track, but that is where the similarities end. This track has less banking on the turns than Bristol has in the front stretch. Flat and shaped like a paper clip, we’ll see the less seasoned drivers start to lose their brakes about three fourths of the way through the race. We’ll also see patience in short supply, and with tempers boiling over from California, this race could be a powder keg. More short tempers, more chrome horns, and more wrecked sheet metal are about the only things you can bank on at the short track that lacks serious banking. New this year we’ll see racing in three stages, the first 130 laps, the second 130 laps and the final stage of 340 laps. In the last ten years the Hendrick guys have won 10 of 20 races, with nine-time winner Jimmie Johnson being their premiere driver. Not only does Hendrick motor shop have 13 wins in the last 20 races, they’ve won nine of the last eleven races! The Hendrick Motorsports dominance helps give Chevrolet 14 wins in the last 20 races! Will Hendrick Motorsports domination continue? We’ll find out Sunday.

Tuesday look for the Top 10 drivers on short tracks.

TOP FIVE DRIVERS

CALIFORNIA Auto Club 400

My #5 driver is a Monster here, #41 Kurt Busch. Kurt comes in with 23 career starts, one win and seven Top 5’s. His last win came in 2003, recently three of his last four races were Top 5’s.

My #4 driver to watch has the highest average finish here, #48 Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie has 22 starts with six wins and 13 Top 5’s. He is the defending champion of this race, 15 of his last 16 races were Top 15’s, with ten of those being 3rd place or better. Jimmie’s team, Hendrick Motorsports, has ten wins in the 27 races run so far at California – the most of any owner.

The #3 pick has only raced here once, #24 Chase Elliott. Chase had a great debut here last year 6th place. Chase is off to good start this year, he sits #3 in points and is #2 hottest over the last six races. Just like Jimmie Johnson he drives for Hendrick Motorsports the winning-est team ever here.

The #2 driver is another former winner here, #2 Brad Keslowski. Brad won here two years ago. He has that one win in just eight starts. He my #2 ranked downforce track driver and is #4 hottest over the last six races.

My #1 driver is my #1 ranked downforce track driver, #22 Joey Logano. Joey has ten starts here and three Top 5’s. One of those Top 5’s was his 4th finish last year. He is #3 hottest driver over the last six races. His hot streak should continue here in the city of Angels.

Monday we’ll preview the STP 500 from Martinsville Speedway.

MARCH 26TH, 3:30PM CHARLOTTE TIME FOX TV

2 Miles, 14 Degrees of Banking

We are now four races into the year and the drivers have raced on a Plate track, Flat track, Downforce track and an Intermediate track. I classify this as a Downforce track so it will be the first time we repeat a “track type.” On the minds of drivers will be handling: the battle between making your car go fast combined with “grip” or “downforce” will be paramount. The team that finds the best mix of speed and downforce can win this race. And of course we have a new rules package. Always looming on the horizon at California is fuel mileage. Because this track is wide and cautions few, sometimes it comes down to the team with the best fuel strategy. The new twist this year are the addition of stages. The first stage ends after 60 laps, the second after 120 laps and the third and last stage goes 80 laps. Interestingly six of the last nine Auto Club Speedway races have been won by Chevrolet teams. Hendrick Motorsports has three of those. They also have the most wins here in the last ten races. But the Toyotas of Joe Gibbs Racing have won two of the last four here. Will Chevy domination continue? We’ll know on Sunday.

Tuesday look for our Top 10 Drivers on Downforce Tracks.

TOP FIVE DRIVERS

CAMPING WORLD 500  from PHOENIX

My #5 driver is the #2 hottest driver over the last six races, #42 Kyle Larson. Kyle also sits #2 in points so far in the first three races of the year. He has only raced here six times but he did finish #3 here last November.

The #4 driver to watch has been much better here since they repaved and rebanked the track in the middle of 2011, #2 Brad Keselowski. Brad is my #2 rated flat track driver and he has had four Top 5’s in the 11 races. Brad’s is also #5 hottest over the last six races and is #1 in points.

My #3 driver to watch has fewer starts than Kyle Larson, #24 Chase Elliott. Chase only has two starts here in the Cup series both Top 10’s.  He comes in here #3 hot over the last six races and his team Hendrick Motorsports have eight wins in the last ten years the most of any other team by far. The engine shop there is responsible for 12 wins in the last 10 years.

My #2 pick has also found success here since the repave #22 Joey Logano. Joey has 11 starts, three Top 5’s and a win on the new surface. Six the last seven races were Top 10’s and all his Top 5’s came in this stretch including his win last November.  Joey is ranked #3 on flat tracks and currently sits #1 hottest over the last six races.

My #1 driver to watch this week is the driver who has the highest average finish in Phoenix, #4 Kevin Harvick. In total Kevin has 30 starts, eight wins and 13 Top 5’s. Since the repave he has 11 starts, six wins and nine Top 5’s. Kevin has seven straight Top 5’s five of which were wins. You should never count out Harvick but if you do, this is the last place to do it. He has #1 Average finish, sits #4 hottest and is #1 angriest after the first three races.
