1 mile, 24 Degrees of Banking

Coming out of the New Hampshire Motor Speedway –known as the Magic Mile- it is hard to maintain that same level of excitement, but the Monster Mile at Dover comes pretty close. The banking is high and the sight lines are amazing. Take the 12 degrees of banking at New Hampshire and double it to 24 degrees. Just about wherever you sit you have a great view of the track. There is never a dull moment at the Monster Mile and the drama surrounding the Chase only adds to it. This year, for the second time, we have the elimination element – after this race four of the sixteen drivers will be eliminated based on the last three races. Something to keep in mind here at Dover: Hendrick Motorsports has won nine races here in the past ten years (45%)including the last four. Roush Fenway, the next highest team in race wins, has four race wins in the last 10 years and Matt Kenseth won the most recent race for Roush Fenway in 2011. Very few of the sixteen Chase drivers are completely safe from elimination. A win gets you in, so will this race be won in a late race restart? We’ll find out Sunday.

TOP FIVE DRIVERS

NEW HAMPSHIRE MOTOR SPEEDWAY SYLVANIA 300

My #5 driver is the #1 hottest driver, #22 Joey Logano. Joey has 13 starts, two wins and four Top 5’s. He is the defending Champion of this race and finished 4th here in July. Don’t look for red hot Joey to cool off here.

My #4 pick has never won here, #88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. Dale has 32 starts, no wins and eight Top 5’s. He is ranked #2 on Flat tracks and here in New Hampshire, Dale is #4 in highest average finish. He finished 5th here in July.

The #3 pick is another former-winner, #20 Matt Kenseth. Matt comes into the Granite Planet with 31 starts, one win and seven Top 5 finishes. He won this race in 2013 and placed 6th in July.

My #2 driver is the most recent winner here, #18 Kyle Busch. Kyle has 21 starts, two wins and eight total Top 5’s. In fact in his last five races here, three were second place finishes, an eighth place finish and the win in July. He is 3rd hottest over the last six weeks and looking to do well here, again.

The #1 pick has been very consistent here, #2 Brad Keselowski. Brad has 12 starts here with one win and five Top 5’s. He is ranked #1 for me on flat tracks and was #2 here in July. He is also #1 in highest average finish.

Monday we’ll preview the AAA 400 from Dover.

CHASE RACE #2

This week the drivers of the NASCAR circuit head back north to the Granite State to New Hampshire International Speedway located about 75 miles from downtown Boston. A very flat, 1.05 mile track always provides an interesting race. The Top 16 Chase for the Cup has been set, and this is race #2 of the ten-race Chase for the Cup. Because of the flat, tight turns there is always beatin’ and bangin’ on this track. None of the Chase drivers want to be caught up in any of that, they just want to get in and get as many points as possible. From this point on no one wants a DNF (Did Not Finish), one can hurt; two will kill your chances at the Cup. Joe Gibbs Racing has the most wins in the last ten years with five including a win from Kyle Busch earlier in the year. Hendrick Motorsports has the second most wins here over the last ten years with four. In 2011 both Stewart Haas drivers, Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman swept this track using motors from -you guessed it – Hendrick Motorsports. Team Penske swept the track last year with wins from both drivers showing that Ford can win here. Which of the three teams will dominate in this crucial Chase race? We’ll find out on Sunday.

Tuesday look for our Top 10 teams in advance of the Sylvania 300 from New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

TOP FIVE DRIVERS

CHICAGOLAND SPEEDWAY MY AFIBSTORY 400

The #5 driver is the hottest driver over the last six races, #22 Joey Logano. Joey has six starts at Chicagoland and just one Top 5. It is important to note that that one Top 5 came last year. Joey should go pretty far in the Chase and it will begin with a big finish here at the start.

My #4 pick just made the Chase by finishing Top 30 in points, #18 Kyle Busch. Kyle comes into the Second City where he has ten starts, a win and four Top 5’s. Kyle is #4 hottest over the last six weeks. He is also hot here where he finished Top 10 in his last three Chicagoland races and two of those three were Top 5’s.

My #3 pick has won on 19 different tracks but not this one, #48 Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie has 13 starts, no wins and seven Top 5’s. Even with no wins, Jimmie is very happy to be here where he has over 50% Top 5’s and he has a good shot to get his Chase Mojo flowin’, which needs because he comes in here #11 hottest over the last six races.

My #2 driver is happy to start the Chase here where he has two wins, #4 Kevin Harvick. Kevin comes in with 14 starts, two wins and eight Top 5’s (57%). He finished 5th here last year and is the best on these low-banked intermediate tracks.

The #1 driver to watch is the defending champion of this race, #2 Brad Keselowski. Brad won here last year for the second time. His other win was in 2012. He has six starts here, the two wins and three Top 5 finishes. He is Top 5 for me on these downforce tracks and is #2 hottest over the last six weeks. And it doesn’t hurt that the #1 hottest driver is his teammate Joey Logano.

Monday we’ll preview the Sylvania 300 from New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
