2.5 MILES

BANKING Turn 1 14 degrees, Turn 2, 8 degrees, Turn 3, 6 Degrees

Aug 3rd, 1:00PM ET on ESPN TV

Is this a road course, a flat track, or a tri-oval? How about all of the above? Only 3 turns, yet each one is banked slightly differently. When you attend this race in this spectacular part of the country, it is like watching a road course because you can’t really see every turn on the track. We have seen 12 different drivers win here in the last ten years. Those 12 drivers come from six different teams. Three teams have 80% of those wins. Hendrick Motorsports has the most wins in the last ten years, with seven – three from Jeff Gordon, two from Jimmie Johnson and one each from Kasey Kahane and Dale Earnhardt Jr.. They also have the four most recent victories here. Joe Gibbs Racing has five wins in the last ten years – one from Joey Logano and four from Denny Hamlin. Roush/Fenway Racing has four wins in the last ten years. Will Hendrick Motorsports domination continue? We’ll know on Sunday.

Tuesday look for our top 10 drivers on flat tracks. Thursday we rank the top 30 drivers for Sunday’s race.

TOP FIVE DRIVERS

BRICKYARD 400 at the INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

My #5 pick has never finished in the Top 5 before, #2 Brad Keselowski. Brad has four starts with a best finish of 9th, twice. Brad is rated as my #1 flat track driver though and he had two great races at New Hampshire and Pocano, so this could be a new high for Bad Brad at Indy.

My #4 pick is #2 hottest over the last six weeks, #88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. has 14 starts, no win’s and only one Top 5 finish.

Dale likes the tracks without much banking and he is very happy to be here where Chevys have done well. He is #3 rated for me on this type of track.

My #3 pick is tied as the winning-est driver here, #48 Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie has 12 starts here and four wins. Four out of 12 is pretty strong! The funny thing is, he has three other finishes 36 or worse. Jimmie won here two years ago and finished second here last year. He’s also the #2 flat track driver. On his mind though is his last two races this year where he finished in 42nd, helping him to a disappointing 11th hottest over the last six weeks.

My #2 pick is an Indiana native, #31 Ryan Newman. Ryan comes in pretty confident because he is the defending champion of this race. He has a new team this year – Richard Childress Racing, but they aren’t strangers to victory lane here. RCR has won here with two different drivers.

The #1 driver to watch tied with teammate Jimmie Johnson for winning-est driver, #24 Jeff Gordon. Jeff has 20 starts, four wins and 11 Top 5’s. Jeff drives a Chevy which has won here the last 11 years in a row and GM has won 16 of the 20 races run here. Jeff last won here in 2004 but with over half on his starts resulting in a Top 5 Jeff comes in loaded with confidence.

CROWN ROYAL 400

INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

JULY 27th, 1PM ET on ESPN TV

2.5 MILES 9 Degrees of Banking

Races have taken place here since 1911 -everything from automobiles to hot air balloons- but it was a momentous occasion in 1993 when NASCAR tested here. It was an even bigger moment in 1994 when they dropped the green flag at the Brickyard 400. It was very interesting to say the least to see stock cars on the track, where every Memorial Day since I can remember, I watched the best open wheel drivers in the world compete. They may not go as fast as the open wheel cars but they are every bit as impressive. 2.5 miles in stock car racing is a LONG way and when you have two very long straightaways followed by turns, you HAVE to get whoa’ed up because you have very little banking in the turns. This is a big track that makes tempers very short. In 20 races Chevrolet or GM cars have won 16 (or 80%) of the races. Jeff Gordon and his teammate Jimmie Johnson have four each of those wins. Ford hasn’t found Victory Lane since 1999, Toyota has never won here. Can Chevy make it 12 straight? We’ll find out on Sunday.

Tuesday look for our top 10 drivers on flat tracks in advance of the Crown Royal 400 from Indianapolis.

TOP FIVE DRIVERS

NEW HAMPSHIRE MOTOR SPEEDWAY

The #5 pick is the defending champion of this race, #20 Matt Kenseth. Matt is currently 16th hottest over the last six weeks. Matt likes the fact that the last three New Hampshire races were won in Toyota’s. He needs to turn his luck around and get a win and if he can’t do that he needs to get points to make sure he stays in hunt to lock up one of the five remaining Chase spots. If desperation makes inspiration Matt should have a top finish here in the granite planet.

The #4 pick is having a dream season, #88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. Dale has 29 starts, no wins and just seven Top 5 finishes. Dale finished 6th in his last stop here. He is also #1 hottest over the last six weeks and rated Top 5 for me on Flat Tracks.

My #3 driver has struggled here over the years, #2 Brad Keselowski. Brad has nine starts, no wins and has three total career Top 5’s. Good stats but not great stats. But, he is rated #2 for me on flat tracks and is #2 hottest over the last six weeks. He came in 2nd place in the fall of 2011 and his three Top 5’s all came since then. In the last five races his worst finish was 11th.

My #2 pick is still fighting hard for another win, he might not make it but he should get close, #24 Jeff Gordon. Jeff has 36 starts, three wins, and 16 Top 5’s. His last win came in 1998, but his recent stats here are still impressive. Jeff’s last 17 races at the Magic Mile were all Top 15’s. He has the #2 Best Average Finish.

My #1 driver is rated #1 for me on the flat tracks, #48 Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie has 24 starts, three wins, and ten Top 5’s. Jimmie last won this race in 2010 and has seven Top 5’s in his last 14 starts. His last four starts were all Top 10’s. That makes him an odds-on favorite in my book!

Monday look our preview the Brickyard 400 from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
