RACE PREVIEW

BIG MACHINE VODKA BRICKYARD 400

INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

JULY 5th, 4PM ET on NBCSN TV

2.5 MILES 9 Degrees of Banking

Stages End after 50/100/160 Laps

Races have taken place here since 1911 -everything from automobiles to hot air balloons- but it was a momentous occasion in 1993 when NASCAR tested here. It was an even bigger moment in 1994 when they dropped the green flag at the Brickyard 400. It was very interesting, to say the least, to see stock cars on the track, where every Memorial Day since I can remember, I watched the best open wheel drivers in the world compete. They may not go as fast as the open wheel cars but they are every bit as impressive. 2.5 miles in stock car racing is a LONG way and when you have two very long straightaways followed by sharp turns, you HAVE to get whoa’ed up because you have very little banking in the turns. This is a big track that makes tempers very short. In 26 races run here Chevrolet or GM cars have won 17 or 65% of the races. Hendrick Motorsports has the most wins of any team with ten including the race win in 2017. Jimmie Johnson has four of those wins. Ford got a win from #4 Kevin Harvick last year after seeing  #2 Brad Keselowski win the year before and Toyota got their first win four years ago with Kyle Busch who won again in 2016. Can Chevy make it back into Victory lane? We’ll find out on Sunday.

Tuesday look for our Top Ten owners and Thursday we’ll have our Top 30 drivers in advance of the Big Machine Vodka 400 from the Brickyard.

TOP FIVE DRIVERS TO WATCH

Top 5 Drivers to watch: POCANO

The #5 driver is a former winner here, #12 Ryan Blaney. Ryan won in this race three years ago and has just eight starts. He is my #8 flat track driver but he is also #1 hottest over the last six races. This team continues to just get better, they are coming off a great win at Talladega and I think they should have a great day in the mountains.

My #4 driver is the most recent winner here, #11 Denny Hamlin . Denny has five wins here in just 28 starts, he also has 11 Top 5’s-39%. He is my #3 rated flat track driver and comes in here 2nd hottest over the last six races this season. He is the current winning-est driver here.

TOP FIVE DRIVERS

GEICO 500 from TALLADEGA

My #5 driver has really done very well here lately, #10 Aric Almirola. Aric has 20 starts and four Top 5’s. He did get a win in the Playoff race in 2018, that win and all four Top 5’s came in his last six starts. He is my #2 rated driver on the Super Speedways but also just #19 hottest over the last six weeks.

My #4 pick got his very first win here, #2 Brad Keselowski. In 22 starts Brad has won here five times, his first win in spring 2009 and his last win in the Playoffs in 2017. He is the current winning-est driver here at ‘dega. He has seven total Top 5’s (32%).  Brad comes here 4th in points and 4th hottest over the last six weeks. Keep in mind Brad’s last Top 5 was his win in fall of 2017.

The number 3 pick is the winning-est driver on the circuit so far this year, #11 Denny Hamlin. Denny has 28 starts, one win and seven Top 5’s. Denny is the #3 Super Speedway driver and is #7 hottest over the last six weeks. He is locked into the Playoffs and here that is a BIG advantage. He can take some risks.

My #2 driver is the defending champion of this race, #9 Chase Elliott. Chase has eight starts, the win in this race last year and three Top 5’s, 38%. Chase sits #2 in points and #1 hottest over the last six weeks.

My #1 driver is a three time winner here, #22 Joey Logano. Joey has 22 starts, three wins and eight Top 5’s. He comes in here third in points, and #5 hottest over the last six weeks. He is very happy to be here where Team Penske have won seven of the last 11 races.
