RACE PREVIEW

AAA 500

TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

NOVEMBER 6, 3PM EST ESPN TV

1.5 Miles, 24 Degrees of Banking

Seven races into the Chase and #48 Jimmie Johnson takes the lead for the first time. Jimmie leads #2 Brad Keselowski by just two points after trailing Brad by seven last week. There are just three races left for these drivers to settle this – all Jimmie Johnson needs to do for the next three weeks is finish in front of Brad – easier said than done. Brad Keselowski. has to keep the pressure on and maybe pick up a win or two along the way. This track is another that may as well hang a sign that says “House of Roush”. In the 23 Cup races that have been run here, nine of them have been won by the Roush/Fenway team of drivers; the first in the inaugural race in 1997 (Jeff Burton) and the last in April of this year (Greg Biffle). No other owner even comes close: Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing each have three wins – when combined still less than Team Roush. Brad and Jimmie come in here looking strong and hoping to lock in the lead. Can one of them do it in Texas?  We’ll see on Sunday.

TOP 5 DRIVERS TO WATCH

Tum’s Fast Relief 500 from MARTINSVILLE

My #5 pick has just returned to racing after being away for two weeks to recuperate from two concussions, #88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. is out of the Chase but even with an achy head, Jr. is a very good short track driver. He has 25 starts and 10 Top 5’s here. His last four races here were all Top 10’s, two being Top 5’s including a 3rd place finish earlier in the year.

The #4 pick has never had a Top 5 here at Martinsville,#2 Brad Keselowski. Brad has five starts here and not only were none of those Top 5’s, he has had only one Top 10 – a 9th place finish here in April. So why put him in my Top5? Because Brad is only getting better here and this is his season of over-performing, so I believe he is due for his first Top 5.

My #3 driver to watch is the winning-est current driver here #24 Jeff Gordon. Jeff is a 7-time former winner here and his team Hendrick Motorsports has won half the races at this track over the last ten years. 15 of Jeff’s last 19 starts here were all Top 5’s. Jeff has 39 starts, seven wins and 25 Top 5’s. His last win though was the fall of 2005.

My #2 driver has the highest average finish here, #48 Jimmie Johnson.  Jimmie has 21 starts and 18 of those were Top 10’s, 15 of those were top 5’s. 11 of his last 14 races were Top 5’s. And Jimmie has six wins in just 21 starts! He is battling to win the Championship and I think this race will end in a door to door battle with…

My #1 driver, who once won three straight races here, #11 Denny Hamlin. Denny has great stats at this track – in 14 starts he has nine Top 5’s and four wins. If Denny wants back into the Championship hunt, a win here would really help.

COMING UP

TUMS FAST RELIEF 500

Martinsville Speedway

October 28th, 2:00 PM ET, ESPN TV

.526 Mile, 12 Degrees of Banking

We are six races through the 10 race Chase for the Cup. #2 Brad Keselowski, #48 Jimmie Johnson, #11 Denny Hamlin, #15 Clint Bowyer and #5 Kasey Kahne are showing themselves as the cars the beat. This is the last of the season’s six short track races. We know that short tracks bring on short tempers and with just four races to go in the season, the drivers are doing what they must to gather enough points to claim a successful season. We probably won’t see a lot of patience on the track – bump and run could be the phrase of the day, or worse yet, dump and run. Since Rusty Wallace won here in spring of 2004 in a Dodge, we have only seen two different manufacturers take the checkered flag – Chevrolet has had 12 and Toyota four. Could this be the year Dodge or Ford gets back to victory lane? We’ll find out on Sunday.

Tuesday look for our Top 10 short track drivers.

TOP 5 DRIVERS

HOLLYWOOD CASINO 400

The #5 driver to watch is #1 in points and the hottest driver over the last six weeks, #2 Brad Keselowski. Brad comes into the sunflower state confident because not only has he collected more points than any other driver in the last six weeks, he won here in early 2011. He has five starts, one win and two Top 5’s.

My #4 driver to watch has never won here but he has been in the Top 5 pretty consistently, #99 Carl Edwards. Carl is a Top  3 driver on down force tracks. Carl, while winless so far, has  four Top 5’s in his ten starts.

My #3 driver is another former winner here, #11 Denny Hamlin. Denny got his first and only win here earlier in the year but this is a repave so throw those notes away. Denny has eight starts with one win and only three Top 5’s. Denny has been over-performing almost everywhere this season; we’ll see if that continues here on the new pavement.

My #2 driver to watch is pretty much out of the championship hunt but he has been very strong here, #16 Greg Biffle. Greg is 6th in points and 43 points behind the leader. He should be very confident because he has seven straight Top 10 finishes and five of those were Top 5’s. In fact with 12 starts Greg has two wins and seven total Top 5’s.

My #1 driver is ranked #1 on tracks like this, #48 Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie has 12 starts, two win’s and five Top 5’s. Jimmie is only seven points behind leader Brad Keselowski. With only five races to go Jimmie needs to keep workin’ on bridging that gap.

Monday look for our preview of the Tums Fast Relief 500 from Martinsville Speedway.
