RACE PREVIEW:PHOENIX

SUBWAY FRESH FIT 500

PHOENIX INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY

March 4th, 3:00 PM CHARLOTTE TIME FOX TV

1 MILE, TURNS 1&2 12 DEGREES, TURNS 3&4 10 DEGREES of BANKING

What a place to for the first flat track race of the year, a 1 mile flat track:  a track where every turn is slightly different. There is no such thing as “get your car right and cruise around”. Most drivers have a good set up for turns 1 & 2 or for turns 3 & 4. Some try to get a compromise in between both, and some drivers are simply trying to find any set up that gets them fast and keeps them off the wall. No matter what your strategy is, this track can be very, very tough. Rookies typically struggle here. This will be the second race run on this new configuration, it has been slightly re-banked and widened with the backstretch increased.  From 1988 to 2002 Ford won eleven of the fifteen races, since then Chevrolet has won twelve out of sixteen races and half of those wins were Hendrick Motorsports. Regardless, after all the hoopla that surrounds Daytona, it will be good to get back to good ol’ flat track racing.

TOP 5 DRIVERS:DAYTONA

Top 5 Drivers to Watch:Daytona 500

My #5 driver won the Daytona 500 in 2004, #88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. has 24 starts, two wins and eight Top 5’s. Jr. was the runner-up in the 500 in 2010. His owner, Hendrick Motorsports, has always made great cars for this track and this year should be no exception. Jr. will start 5th.

The #4 driver is a two-time winner here at Daytona, #29 Kevin Harvick. Kevin has 21 starts, with wins in the 500 in 2007 and in July’s 400 mile race in 2009. Four of his last six races were Top 5 finishes. Kevin is my #3 rated driver on restrictor plate tracks and he will start in lucky 13th place.

My #3 driver to watch has three wins here, but only in July – never in the 500, #14 Tony Stewart. Tony has 25 starts, three wins and seven Top 5 finishes. Tony is still on a hot streak coming off his race and Championship win in Miami last year. The hot streak continued yesterday with Tony winning one of the Duel races.

My #2 pick is a former winner, #17 Matt Kenseth. Matt has 24 starts, one win, and four Top 5’s. Matt has the skills to move thru the draft and the Ford power to get the job done. Plus the Roush drivers all showed great ability to work in tandem with each other and this year that is very important. Matt won one of the Duel races yesterday.  Matt will start 4th.

My #1 pick is a driver who’s never won here and in 14 starts has finished in the Top 5 only four times, #99 Carl Edwards. Carl is my #1 restrictor plate driver and should still be on a hot streak from last year; he was one point away from being the champ. He pushed Trevor Bayne to the win last year and plans to get the win for himself this year at Daytona. Carl will start on the pole.

Monday look for our preview of the Subway Fresh Fit 500 from Phoenix.
