TOP 5 DRIVERS

Texas AAA 500 from TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

My #5 driver is still in the Championship hunt (sort of) here, #18 Kyle Busch. Kyle is a long shot in the Chase as he is 36 points out with just three races to go. But he comes into Texas with 16 starts, one win and six Top 5’s. He won here earlier in the year and that has helped to give him the #3 Best Average Finish.

My #4 driver to watch is a three-time former winner, #99  Carl Edwards. Carl has 17 starts, three wins and seven Top 5’s. Carl is #4 rated on tracks like this and finished 3rd here in April. Carl isn’t in The Chase, but he’s working very hard to salvage a horrible season.

The #3 driver has been very consistent here, #16 Greg Biffle. Greg has 19 starts, two wins, and eight Top 5’s. He has an amazing ten straight Top 10’s and seven of those were Top 5’s. In the April race Greg finished 4th.

My #2 pick is the defending champion of this race, #48 Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie has 20 starts here, two wins, and nine Top 5’s. He is rated #3 on tracks like this, has the #2 Best Average Finish at Texas, and is #1 hottest over the last six weeks. He would be my #1 pick except for…

My #1 pick this week is the driver who has the best average finish here, #20 Matt Kenseth. Matt has always done very well here. He has 22 starts, two wins and 12 Top 5 finishes. Five of his last six starts were all Top 5’s. Matt is not only the best on these intermediate tracks, he is in a dead heat with Jimmie Johnson and needs to finish in front of him to win the Chase.

TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

NOVEMBER 3, 3PM EST ESPN TV

1.5 Miles, 24 Degrees of Banking

Seven races into the Chase and #48 Jimmie Johnson and #20 Matt Kenseth are tied in points with Matt winning the tie breaker. There are just three races left for these drivers to settle this. This track is another that may as well hang a sign that says “House of Roush”. In the 25 Cup races that have been run here, nine of them have been won by the Roush/Fenway team of drivers; the first in the inaugural race in 1997 (Jeff Burton) and the last in April of 2012 (Greg Biffle). No other owner even comes close: Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing each have four wins – when combined still less than Team Roush. Matt Kenseth has two of those wins in his time with Roush/Fenway and Jimmie Johnson has two of the Hendrick Motorsports wins. Matt and Jimmie come in here looking strong and hoping to lock in the lead. Can one of them do it in Texas?  We’ll see on Sunday.

TOP 5 DRIVERS

Tum’s Fast Relief 500 from MARTINSVILLE

My #5 driver, is my #1 rated short-track driver, #18 Kyle Busch. Kyle has wins at Richmond and Bristol, the other short tracks but not here. He has 16 starts, no wins, and seven Top 5’s. Four of his last six starts were Top 5’s.

My #4 pick never had a Top 5 here at Martinsville until his 19th start, #29 Kevin Harvick. Kevin has 24 starts, one win, and three Top 5’s, The win and the Top 5’s all happened in his last six starts. I think it is fair to say that Kevin is just getting better here. And he is #3 hottest over the last six weeks.

My #3 pick is my #3 ranked short-track driver, #88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. is a very good short track driver and almost got a win last week in Talladega. He has 27 starts and 10 Top 5’s here. He drives for Hendrick Motorsports who have won 55% of the Martinsville races in the last 10 years.

My #2 driver to watch is the #2 current winning-est driver and has the #2 Best Average Finish, #24 Jeff Gordon. 16 of Jeff’s last 21 starts here were all Top 5’s. Jeff has 41 starts, seven wins and 26 Top 5’s. Jeff is a 7-time former winner here. His last win though was the fall of 2005.

My #1 driver is the winning-est current driver here and has the Best Average Finish, #48 Jimmie Johnson.  Jimmie has 23 starts and 16 of those were Top 5’s. 13 of his last 16 races were Top 5’s. And Jimmie has eight wins in just 23 starts including his last two stops here! He is battling to win the Championship and needs a big finish

to put distance between himself and #20 Matt Kenseth.
