RACE PREVIEW

THE POCANO 400

POCANO RACEWAY
June 2nd, 2PM Charlotte time on FS 1 TV
2.5 Miles, Turn #1 14 Degrees, #2 8 Degrees, #3 6 Degrees of Banking

Stage #1 50 laps, Stage #2 50 laps, Stage #3 60 laps

After 13 races it is time we visit the tricky triangle. Is this a road course, flat track, or a tri-oval? How about all of the above? Only 3 turns, yet each one is different. When you attend this race in this spectacular part of the country it is like watching a road course because you can’t really see every turn on the track. 400 miles and the longest straightaway on the circuit means it is a battle of horsepower and endurance: endurance of the driver in the heat and of the motor for over 400 miles. Two teams account for 60% of the wins here in the last ten years.  Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing each have six victories in the last 10 years. The JGR/Toyota motor shop sat in victory lane the last three straight races.  This season wins have been dominated by two teams Joe Gibbs Racing with eight wins and Team Penske and their four wins. Can Joe Gibbs Racing maintain their dominance at this track and this season? We’ll find out on Sunday.

Tuesday look for our Top 10 drivers on flat tracks. Thursday we’ll have our Top 30 drivers in advance of the race at Pocono.

TOP FIVE DRIVERS TO WATCH

Top 5 Drivers to watch: POCANO

The #5 driver is a former winner here, #12 Ryan Blaney. Ryan won in this race two years ago and has just six starts. He is my #10 flat track driver but he is also #11 hottest over the last six races. This team continues to just get better and I think they should have a great day in the mountains.

My #4 driver is the defending champion of this race, #19 Martin Truex Jr. Martin has two wins here in just 26 starts, he also has just five Top 5’s. He is my #6 rated flat track driver and comes in here 7th hottest over the last six races this season. His other win here was in this early race in 2010.

My #3 pick has a great Top five streak going here, #2 Brad Keselowski. Brad has 18 starts, one win, and nine Top 5’s including six of the last seven straight races. Brad is my #3 rated flat track driver and he is #3 hottest over the last six weeks.

My #2 driver is the most recent winner here, #18 Kyle Busch. Kyle has 28 starts and that win last July and the July before and seven Top 5’s. Kyle is my #2 ranked flat track driver and sits #1 in points but he is #6 hottest over the last six races.

The #1 driver has never won here, #4 Kevin Harvick. Kevin has 36 starts, no wins, and 12 Top 5’s. He is also my #1 ranked flat track driver. He is #5 hottest over the last six weeks. He has five straight Top 5 finishes here including two 2nd place finishes in 2017. Currently winless I think “the Closer” will close in the Pocanos.

Monday look for our preview of the FireKeepers Casino 400 from Michigan Intl. Speedway.
