Team Penske gets the win from Joey Logano and stays at #2. With 33 races in the book and just three races remaining it is getting hard to make move moves on the chart. In fact absolutely no one changes place this week.  Will things change up in Texas? I think they will.

Playoff Race #8

Seven races into the Playoffs and there are a lot of simmering tensions in the garage. Each race seems to bring more to the surface. There are just three races left for these drivers to settle this. Joey Logano is locked into the final Championship race with his win at Martinsville and Martin Truex Jr won’t soon forget about that front stretch pass. This track is another that used to hang a sign that says “House of Roush”. In the 35 Cup races that have been run here, nine of them have been won by the Roush Fenway team of drivers; the first in the inaugural race in 1997 (Jeff Burton) and the last in April of 2012 (Greg Biffle).  But Hendrick Motorsports is tied with Roush in total wins, they also have nine wins since 1997. But in the last ten years Roush has three wins and Hendrick has seven. Also in the last ten years we have seen Joe Gibbs Racing get six wins including the Kyle Busch win here earlier in the year. Those are the three dominate teams. Who will dominate?  We’ll see on Sunday.

Tuesday look for our Top 10 drivers on Intermediate tracks in advance of the AAA 500 from Texas Motor Speedway.

TOP FIVE DRIVERS TO WATCH

First Data 500 from MARTINSVILLE

My #5 pick is the series’ most recent winner, #9 Chase Elliott. Here at Martinsville Chase has five starts, no wins and only one Top 5. The most important stat is his team, Hendrick Motorsports produced 40% of the wins in the last ten years or twenty races. In that time span their motor shop had 55% of the wins. Chase finished 9th here in April, I feel he will finish much better here in the Playoffs.

My #4 driver to watch is my #1 ranked short track driver, #4 Kevin Harvick. Kevin has 31 starts, one win and 5 Top 5’s. Kevin won here in the spring race of 2011. More importantly he finished 5th in this race last year and 5th here in April. Now that Playoff pressure is at full force expect Kevin to use ALL of his short track skills.

My #3 driver is on a great streak here, #2 Brad Keselowski. Brad has 17 starts, a win in April 2017, and six Top 5’s. Brad has really, just gotten better here. All of his Top 5’s have come in his last ten starts. His last five stops here were all Top 10’s. Four of those five were Top 5’s.

My #2 driver has horrible stats here, #78 Martin Truex Jr. Martin has 25 starts, no wins and four Top 5’s. Those are not even close to good stats but he finished 2nd in this race last year and 4th here in April. He is #2 hottest over the last six weeks.

My #1 pick is the defending champion of this race, #18 Kyle Busch. Kyle has finished all of his last six races in the Top 5. Kyle has 25 starts, two win’s in early 2016 and this race in 2017, and 13 Top 5’s (52%). Kyle is #9 hottest over the last six weeks. More importantly he is #1 in points. To stay in the Top 4 he is going to need to do well where he has been strong and it starts here.

Hendrick Motorsports, Richard Childress Racing, Chip Ganassi Racing, Wood Brothers Racing, JTG Racing and Leavine Family Racing all safely inside the Top 10 and all looking at how they can move up over the last four races of the year.

Playoff Race #7

We are six races through the ten race Playoff for the Monster Energy Cup. Drivers #2 Brad Keselowski, #12 Ryan Blaney, #42 Kyle Larson and #88 Alex Bowman have been eliminated from the Playoffs. #18 Kyle Busch, #4 Kevin Harvick, #78 Martin Truex, #9 Chase Elliott,  #14 Clint Bowyer,  #22 Joey Logano,  #41 Kurt Busch and #10 Aric Almirola will all move on. These eight drivers are from five different teams. The only teams with a chance at a championship are Stewart Hass Racing, Team Penske, Joe Gibbs Racing, Hendrick Motorsports and Furniture Row Racing. All eight drivers are looking for a win that will lock them in to the championship race in Homestead. This is the last of the season’s six short track races. We know that short tracks bring on short tempers and with just four races to go in the season, the drivers are doing what they must to gather enough points to claim a successful season. We probably won’t see a lot of patience on the track – bump and run could be the phrase of the day, or worse yet, dump and run. Chevy has won 60% of the races here in the last 10 years. In those 20 races over the last ten years Hendrick Motorsports accounts for 40% of those wins and their engine shop 55%. Jimmie Johnson is the winning-est current driver here with nine trips to Victory Lane. Kyle #18 Kyle Busch is the defending Champion of this race and #14 Clint Bowyer won here earlier in the year in a Stewart Haas Ford. Will Hendrick Motorsports and Chevy return to Victory Lane? Or will we see Ford or Toyota chip away at team Hendrick’s dominance. We’ll find out on Sunday.

Tuesday look for our Top 10 short track drivers.

TOP FIVE DRIVERS TO WATCH

HOLLYWOOD CASINO 400

My #5 driver is facing elimination, #12 Ryan Blaney. The good news is he is at a track where he has finished Top 5 50% of the time. He has six starts and three top 5’s! One of his Top 5’s was a 3rd place finish in this race last year. Ryan is 10th in points, 22 points below the cut line. Ryan is looking for a big finish and I think he’ll get one.

My #4 driver ran out of gas last Sunday when it looked like he’d get another win, #41 Kurt Busch. Kurt had to be thinking about what he was going to say in Victory Lane when he ran out of fuel at Talladega. Here he has 25 starts, no wins and just three Top 5’s. He is getting finishing well at the right time- he is #1 hottest over the last six weeks. Also keep in mind he finished 2nd here in this race last year.

My #3 driver is the defending champion of this race, #78 Martin Truex Jr. Martin has 20 starts that win and seven Top 5’s. He is #1 rated on tracks like this and #8 hottest over the last six races. Martin didn’t just win here in this race last year he won BOTH races and finished 2nd here in May.

The #2 driver to watch, #18 Kyle Busch. Kyle has 21 starts one win and five Top 5’s. Those stats are not so good but those five Top 5’s came in the last seven races. Seven straight Top 10’s with a win-he’s just getting better here.  He is #2 rated for me on tracks like this. His one win came in the early race in 2016.

My #1 driver to watch is the most recent winner here in the sunflower state, #4 Kevin Harvick. Kevin is the #4 hottest driver over the last six weeks, even with a few runs of bad fortune. Kevin has 25 starts, three wins, and eight Top 5’s. Seven of those Top 5’s came in the last ten stops here and all his wins – one reason he has the #1 average finish. He is also rated #3 for me on tracks like this.
