TOP FIVE DRIVERS

Top 5 Drivers to watch: POCANO

My #5 driver to watch has the worst stats here, #4 Kevin Harvick. Kevin has 31 starts, no wins and just 7 Top 5’s. But he is my #1 rated flat track driver and he has accumulated more points than anyone else this year.

The #4 driver to watch is a three-time former-winner here, #41 Kurt Busch. Kurt won here in June of this year. He also had wins in 2005 and 2007. He got those three wins in 30 starts and he has 13 Top 5’s. More recently, four of his last six starts were Top 5’s.

My #3 pick is also a former winner here, #22 Joey Logano. Joey won here in 2012 he has 15 starts, that win and four Top 5’s. Three of his Top 5’s came in the last four races. Joey is my #2 rated flat track driver and he is #3 hottest over the last six weeks.

The #2 driver is my #2 driver in average finish, #42 Kyle Larson. Kyle has five starts here and has never finished worse than 12th place. He is #1 in average finish among current Sprint Cup drivers. But with retired Jeff Gordon joining the lineup he gets moved to #2. Kyle is #5 hottest over the last six weeks including his fifth place finish at Indy.

My #1 pick is the hottest driver on the circuit, #2 Brad Keselowski. Brad only has five Top 5’s in his 13 starts. But Brad did win this race in 2011 and he had a second place finish last year. Actually three of his last five starts here were Top 5’s. Brad is #3 on flat tracks and #2 in points. Most importantly, he is #1 hottest over the last six weeks and is looking for a big win here in Mountains.

2.5 MILES

BANKING Turn 1 14 degrees, Turn 2, 8 degrees, Turn 3, 6 Degrees

July 31st, 1:30PM ET on NBC-SN TV

Is this a road course, a flat track, or a tri-oval? How about all of the above? Only 3 turns, yet each one is banked slightly differently. When you attend this race in this spectacular part of the country, it is like watching a road course because you can’t really see every turn on the track. We have seen 14 different drivers win here in the last ten years. Those 14 drivers come from seven different teams. Two teams though have 60% of those wins. Hendrick Motorsports has the most wins in the last ten years, with seven – three from Jeff Gordon, two from Jimmie Johnson and one each from Kasey Kahne and Dale Earnhardt Jr. They also have five of the last eight wins. Joe Gibbs Racing has five wins in the last ten years – one from Joey Logano, one from Matt Kenseth in this race last year and three from Denny Hamlin. Will Hendrick Motorsports domination continue? We’ll know on Sunday.

Tuesday look for our top 10 drivers on flat tracks. Thursday we rank the top 30 drivers for Sunday’s race.

TOP 5 DRIVERS

BRICKYARD 400 at the INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

My #5 pick is the 2nd winning-est driver here, #48 Jimmie Johnson.  Jimmie has 14 starts, four wins and five Top 5’s. His last win was in 2012. We know he is locked into the “Chase” so Jimmie can do some wild gambling on pit road toward the end of the race in search of another win or at least another Top 5 finish.

My #4 pick is #1 hottest over the last six weeks, #2 Brad Keselowski. Brad has six starts, no win’s and no Top 5’s. Brad likes the tracks without much banking and he is #3 rated for me on this flat type of track. Brad currently sits #2 in points.

The #3 driver to watch has gotten very good here in his last two stops, #22 Joey Logano. Joey has seven starts, no wins and two Top’s 5’s. Joey’s two Top 5’s came in the last two stops including a second place finish last year.

My #2 pick is a former winner here, #4 Kevin Harvick. Kevin has scored more points than anyone else this year and has been a factor at the end of a race more than any other driver. He has 15 starts, one win and five Top 5’s. He is my #1 rated flat track driver and #4 hottest over the last six weeks.

My #1 pick is the defending champion of this race, #18 Kyle Busch. Kyle comes in pretty confident getting the win last year, in fact three of his last four starts were second place or better. Kyle has a total of 11 starts, last year’s win and four Top 5’s.

CROWN ROYAL 400

INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

JULY 24th, 3PM ET on NBCSN TV

2.5 MILES 9 Degrees of Banking

Races have taken place here since 1911 -everything from automobiles to hot air balloons- but it was a momentous occasion in 1993 when NASCAR tested here. It was an even bigger moment in 1994 when they dropped the green flag at the Brickyard 400. It was very interesting, to say the least, to see stock cars on the track, where every Memorial Day since I can remember, I watched the best open wheel drivers in the world compete. They may not go as fast as the open wheel cars but they are every bit as impressive. 2.5 miles in stock car racing is a LONG way and when you have two very long straightaways followed by turns, you HAVE to get whoa’ed up because you have very little banking in the turns. This is a big track that makes tempers very short. Plus you have the added factor that there are only seven races to go until the “Chase for the Cup” begins. Seven chances left to lock in a playoff spot with a win. In 22 races Chevrolet or GM cars have won 17 (or 77%) of the races. Hendrick Motorsports has the most wins of any team with nine. Jimmie Johnson has four of those wins. Ford hasn’t found Victory Lane since 1999 and Toyota got their first win last year with Kyle Busch. Can Chevy make it back into Victory lane? Will someone new lock into “The Chase?” We’ll find out on Sunday.

Tuesday look for our top 10 teams in advance of the Crown Royal 400 from Indianapolis.

TOP FIVE DRIVERS

NEW HAMPSHIRE MOTOR SPEEDWAY

The #5 pick is a former winner here, #22 Joey Logano. Joey last won here in September of 2014. Joey is currently 3rd hottest over the last six weeks. Joey has 14 starts, two wins and five Top 5’s. Three of those Top 5’s were the last three races!

The #4 pick is leading in the points, #4 Kevin Harvick. Kevin is locked into the Chase and has more points than anyone. Kevin has 30 starts, one win and just seven Top 5 finishes. Kevin finished 3rd in this race last year. He is rated #2 for me on flat tracks.

My #3 pick is the defending champion of this race, #18 Kyle Busch. Kyle has 22 starts, two wins and eight Top 5’s. Kyle is a very good flat track driver and his win last year shows he knows how to get it done.  His team Joe Gibbs Racing has won four of the last seven races.

My #2 driver is the most recent winner here, #20 Matt Kenseth. Matt has 32 starts, two wins, and eight Top 5’s. Matt won here in September of last year and his first win was in 2013 fair to say since coming to Joe Gibbs Racing, Matt has found his way in New England.

My #1 driver is the hottest driver over the last six weeks, #2 Brad Keselowski. Brad has two wins and five Top 5’s in the last six weeks! Here in the Granite State Brad has thirteen starts, one win and has five total career Top 5’s including a second place last year.  He is rated #3 for me on flat tracks and has the #1 average finish. He came in 2nd place in the fall of 2011 and his five Top 5’s all came since then. In the last nine races his worst finish was 12th.
