TOP 5 DRIVERS TO WATCH:KENTUCKY

QUAKER STATE 400 from KENTUCKY SPEEDWAY

The #5 driver to watch won here in the Camping World Truck series and in the Nationwide series, AND is the only driver to win here in the Sprint Cup series, #18 Kyle Busch. Kyle won Kentucky Speedway’s debut Sprint Cup race after winning at two other series here. You would think he would be higher on my list but he is 13th in points and 19th hottest in the last six races.

My #4 driver has also won here both in the Nationwide Series and the Camping World Truck Series, #99 Carl Edwards. Carl is ranked #2 best on Down Force Tracks like this and finished 5th here last year.

My #3 driver to watch has also won here before, #16 Greg Biffle. Greg won in the Camping World Truck Series and is also a two time winner at Kansas Speedway, a track sort of similar to this one. Greg comes in here 5th Hottest over the last six weeks, he’ll need it because he finished 21st here last year.

My #2 driver to watch has been in the NASCAR news lately, #17 Matt Kenseth. Matt finished 6th here last year. He is a top five ranked driver on tracks like this, another reason he is #1 in points. Matt might be leaving his team but he is not done yet.

My #1 driver has never won here in anything, #48 Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie has won at both the old Las Vegas track and at Kansas which are both similar tracks to this. Jimmie is also a Top 3 Down Force Track driver, finished 3rd here last year and is #1 hottest over the last six weeks.

Monday look for our preview of the COKE ZERO 400 from Daytona.

RACE PREVIEW:KENTUCKY

QUAKER STATE 400

KENTUCKY SPEEDWAY

June 30th, 7:30 PM Charlotte Time TNT TV

1 ½ Mile, 14 Degrees of Banking

For 11 years NASCAR has been running races at Kentucky Speedway. The Camping World Truck series, and the Nationwide series have both run here and we saw the Sprint cars debut here last year.. In the last eleven years we have seen seats continually get added year after year to keep up with fan demand. Now boosting well over 100,000, Kentucky Speedway there were many problems getting in and out of the track last year hopefully those problems have been solved for the second Sprint Cup race, the Quaker State 400. Greg Biffle #16 and Brad Keselowski #2 have won here in the Truck series. Kevin Harvick #29, David Gilliland #38 and Joey Logano #20 have won here in the Nationwide series. Carl Edwards #99 has won here in both series. Does that mean anything come Saturday? Not really, but it does give all these drivers a little confidence going into the race. The one driver all eyes will be on is Kyle Busch #18 who won here in ALL three series. Kyle won the inaugural Sprint Cup race last year. Can he maintain Cup dominance in Kentucky? Well find out Saturday night.

Tuesday look for our top 10 Teams in advance of the Quaker State 400.

TOP 5 DRIVERS TO WATCH:SONOMA

TOP 5 DRIVERS TO WATCH: SONOMA RACEWAY

My #5 driver has come very close to winning here in the past, #9 Marcos Ambrose. Marcos is known for his road course skills in native Australia. Marcos almost won this race two years when he was leading but got caught out when he shut off his motor to save fuel and then couldn’t re-fire. That cost him the win and gave Jimmie Johnson his first road course win. Marcos walked away with a 6th place finish and a feeling he needs to show the world of NASCAR what road course racing is all about. Marcos has four starts and two top5’s.

The #4 driver has never won here, #15 Clint Bowyer. Clint is not usually thought of as a top 5 road course driver but his history racing on dirt tracks has helped him to be successful here. Clint has six starts and three top 5’s.  Add to that he is 4th hottest driver over the last six weeks.

My #3 driver to watch is a two time former winner here, #14 Tony Stewart. Tony won here in 2001 and 2005 and has 4 total Top 5 finishes in his 13 starts here. Tony sits 8th in points and needs to stay  in the Top 10. Tony finished 39th here last year after tangling with Brian Vickers.

The #2 driver to watch is another former winner – a five-time former winner, #24 Jeff Gordon. Jeff has five wins here with the last coming in 2006.  He has 19 starts, those 5 wins, and 12 Top 5 finishes. Jeff’s last six races here were all Top 10’s four of those were Top 5’s.

My #1 pick won here two years ago, #48 Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie has ten starts here a win and three Top 5’s – not bad but also keep in mind Jimmie is 3rd hottest over the last six weeks doing well everywhere, I have to think this stop in wine country should be no exception.

Monday look for our preview of the Quaker State 400 from Kentucky Speedway.
