1.05 Miles, 7 Degrees of Banking

Stages end: 75/150/301

This week the drivers of the NASCAR circuit head north to the Granite State, to New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The track is located about 75 miles from downtown Boston and easily reached from Portland, ME and Providence, RI. This very flat 1.05 mile track always provides a very interesting race. The introduction of stage racing has really tracks like this both races in 2017 were helped by the three stage format. Sadly it was too little, too late and we lost the September race to Las Vegas so like 2018 this will be the only stop here this season. Six different teams have won here in the last ten years. Joe Gibbs Racing has eight of those wins, Hendrick Motorsports and Stewart Haas Racing have three each.  Team Penske and Richard Childress Racing have two wins each. The now defunct Michael Waltrip Racing has one win.  Toyota has really dominated here with nine wins in the last twenty races, including five of the last six races. With just seven races to go before the ten-race Playoffs, some of the drivers will be getting even more aggressive than usual. Because of the flat, tight turns there is always beatin’ and bangin’ on this track. Which driver can get one race closer to locking himself into the Playoffs? We’ll know on Sunday.

Spire Motorsports and #77 Justin Haley get an unlikely win, but that won’t move them into the Top ten.  Joe Gibbs Racing stay at #1. Team Penske, Hendrick Motorsports, Stewart Haas Racing and  Chip Ganassi Racing hold their place and all stay put in the Top 5. The wild race at Daytona shook up the typical finish order but could not change the top ten teams, the bottom half of the top ten doesn’t change either. Roush Fenway Racing, Wood Brothers Racing, Richard Childress Racing, JTG Daugherty Racing and  Leavine Family Racing all also stay in place this week. As we roll into a race in Kentucky look for some team movement next week.

RACE PREVIEW

QUAKER STATE 400
KENTUCKY SPEEDWAY
July 13th, 7:30 PM Charlotte Time pn NBCSN TV
1.5 Mile, 17 Degrees of Banking turns 1 &2, 14 Degrees of Banking turns 3 &4

Stages end: 80/160/267

For 18 years NASCAR has been running races at Kentucky Speedway. The Gander Outdoor Truck series and the Xfinity series have both run here, and we saw the Sprint cars debut here eight years ago. Of the Monster Energy cup races run here so far, two of the four winners had won here previously in another series, so it does appear experience on this track is beneficial. Kyle Busch #18, William Byron #24 and Ty Dillion #13 have won here in the Truck series. Kevin Harvick #4, Joey Logano #22, Austin Dillon #3, Ryan Blaney #21, Kyle Busch #18, and Brad Keselowski #2, have won here in the Xfinity series. Kyle Busch has won here in both series. Does that mean those are the only drivers who can win come Saturday? Not really, but it does give those drivers a bit of confidence going into the race. The two drivers to keep an eye on will be Kyle Busch who won here in ALL three series, twice in the truck series, three times in the Xfinity series and twice here in Cup, and Brad Keselowski who has three Cup wins and three Xfinity series wins.  What will happen this year? Well we really don’t know because the entire track has been repaved three years ago. In addition turns 1 & 2 have seen the banking increased from 14 degrees to 17 degrees and the width lessened by 18 feet. Look for faster speeds on the backstretch and more mayhem on turns 3&4. In eight years of Cup racing Toyota has been to victory lane five times to Ford’s three trips. Will Toyota continue to dominate? We’ll find out Saturday night.

Tuesday look for our top 10 drivers on tracks similar to this one, in advance of the Quaker State 400.

TOP FIVE DRIVERS

QUAKER STATE 400 from KENTUCKY SPEEDWAY

My #5 driver has never won here, #11 Denny Hamlin. While he has never won his team Joe Gibbs Racing has won three times and the JGR/Toyota motor shop has five wins in eight races. Denny is #8 hottest over the last six weeks and sits #6 in points.

My #4 driver has never won here either, #4 Kevin Harvick. Kevin sits #3 in points and #7 hottest over the last six weeks. He got his first Top 5 last year but he has six straight Top 10 finishes. Also he has won twice in the Xfinity Series here in the Commonwealth.

My #3 driver to watch has won here before –three times!- #2 Brad Keselowski. Brad won the Cup race here three years ago, two years before that and two years before that. Brad has also won in the Xfinity Series three times. Brad comes in here 4th in points and #6 hottest over the last six weeks.  Brad who is known as a high risk high reward driver finished 37th two years ago. Just don’t block him because he is Mr. Checkers or Wreckers.

My #2 driver is the defending champion of this race two years running, #19 Martin Truex Jr. Martin won here last year and the year before. He has eight starts and just two Top 5 finishes, his two wins. He is #5 hottest over the six weeks and #5 in points, more importantly he is #1 ranked on tracks like this.

The #1 driver to watch won here in the Gander Outdoor Truck series, the Xfinity series, AND was the first driver to win here in the Monster Energy Cup series,  #18 Kyle Busch. Kyle won Kentucky Speedway’s debut Monster Energy race and won again four years ago. In his eight races six have been Top 5’s. The highest percentage of any driver (75%). He has seven wins in all three series here, will he make it eight? We’ll find out Saturday night.

Monday look for our preview of the Foxwoods 301 from New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
