TOP FIVE DRIVERS

FOOD CITY 500 from BRISTOL MOTOR SPEEDWAY

The number #5 driver to watch has won two races here, #2 Brad Keselowski. Brad has those two wins in just 12 starts! He has four total Top 5’s. Brad is not off to a great start this season like his teammate Joey Logano, but this could be just the place for Brad to return to his Top 5 ways.

The #4 driver to watch is a Top 5 ranked short track driver, #19 Carl Edwards. Carl has 23 starts, three wins, and just five Top 5’s. Carl’s last win here was this race in 2014. He a Top 5 ranked short track driver and 5th hottest over the last six weeks.

My #3 driver is the hottest driver on the circuit, #18 Kyle Busch. Kyle has won the last two cup races and more Top 5’s this season than any other driver. Here at Bristol Kyle has 21 starts, five wins, and eight Top 5’s. His team, Joe Gibbs Racing, has won seven of the last 14 races here, and four of those were won by Kyle.

My #2 driver has three straight Top 5’s here, #48 Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie has 26 starts with one win and ten Top 5 finishes. His short track program has been a little off but with his three straight Top 5’s and him being #2 hottest over the last six races, look for him to right things in Thunder Valley.

The #1 pick won the last two summer night races here, #22 Joey Logano.  Joey has 14 starts, those two wins, and three Top 5’s. He is my #1 ranked short track driver and is #6 hottest over the last six weeks.

.5 MILES 30 DEGREES OF BANKING

“Racin’ the Way it Ought to Be” might have been invented by Bristol’s marketing department, but it sure rings true as this IS racing the way it should be. As companies plan to build new tracks, I hope they keep the size and the banking of this track in mind. While there are other short tracks, this is THEE short track: 1/2 mile in length and 30 degrees of banking make this the best door-to-door racing of the season. If your car isn’t beaten up at the end of the day, then you ain’t racing. In the last ten years Joe Gibbs Racing has the most wins with seven. Kyle Busch has four of those. His teammate Matt Kenseth has two of those and Denny Hamlin has one. Their new teammate Carl Edwards has three wins in the last ten years with his former team Roush Fenway Racing. Will JGR domination continue here? We’ll see on Sunday.

TOP FIVE DRIVERS

Duck Commander 500 from TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

The #5 driver is sits #1 in points, #4 Kevin Harvick. Kevin has 26 starts and just six Top 5’s. He is rated #1 for me on the intermediate tracks and he finished 3rd or better in his last three stops here.

My #4 pick won the spring race in 2014, #22 Joey Logano. Joey has 15 starts, that win, and five Top 5 finishes in the Lone Star State. Joey is #2 ranked driver on tracks like this and is 3rd hottest over the last six weeks.

My #3 driver to watch has turned a corner here in Texas, #2 Brad Keselowski. Brad only has four Top 5’s in his 15 starts. Three of those four came in his last three starts. In fact his last seven straight starts have all been 15th or better.

My #2 driver is the winning-ist current driver at Texas Motor Speedway, #48 Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie has 25 starts, six wins and 13 Top five finishes. Jimmie has won the last three straight races here and finished 2nd or better in six of the last eight. He is #3 rated on the intermediate tracks.

My #1 pick this week is the hottest shoe on the circuit, #18 Kyle Busch. Kyle has a Top 5 finish is nine of his last ten starts going back to last season. Kyle has 25 starts here, one win and nine Top 5’s. Look for the hot streak to continue.

RACE PREVIEW

Duck Commander 500

TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

APRIL 9th, 7:30 PM CHARLOTTE TIME FOX TV

1.5 MILES, 24 DEGREES of BANKING

It’s time for an action-packed, high-banked mile & a halfer and Texas Motor Speedway is just the place. Texas is very similar to Atlanta and Charlotte Motor Speedway, but unlike those tracks, this one flattens out very quickly after turn two. The wide, flat back straightaway makes for great passing. In the last ten years or twenty races Chevrolet has ten wins to Ford’s five.  Leading the charge for Chevy we have Hendrick Motorsports who have seven of those wins. Jimmie Johnson has six of those Hendrick Motorsports wins including the last three races. Will Chevy and HMS dominance continue? We’ll find out on Sunday.

Tuesday look for our Top 10 drivers on intermediate tracks.
