RACE PREVIEW

TOYOTA SAVE MART 350

SONOMA RACEWAY

Jun 22nd, 3:00PM ET on TNT-TV

1.99 Miles 10 turns

Twice a year NASCAR makes a detour from the standard oval and gets its swerve on – on a road course. No more just turn left and go. Instead of going counter-clockwise like you would on an oval, road courses go clockwise and twist and turn the whole way. Here at Sonoma Raceway the drivers have 10 turns on an almost 2 mile course in a truly beautiful part of California. We can expect some new faces as road racing regulars from non-NASCAR series insert themselves into the fray. Most of these will be drivers who will replace cup drivers who don’t feel up to the road course challenge. Only ten drivers starting this race have ever won a road course at the Sprint Cup level. Interestingly, Jeff Gordon won here in 2006 – for the fifth time, but since that fifth win we have had a stretch of first time winners here. Seven first time winners in a row! Will we have another first time winner here? We’ll know on Sunday.

Tuesday look for our Top 10 drivers on road course tracks.

TOP 30 DRIVERS

TOP 5 DRIVERS TO WATCH: MICHIGAN INT SPEEDWAY

My #5 driver is the winning-est current driver here, #16 Greg Biffle. Greg has four wins in 23 starts with ten Top 5’s. Greg is 14th in points and hasn’t won yet so he is just barely hanging on a thread in the Race to the Chase. He needs to win a couple of big point wins to lock himself into the Top 16. He has to be happy coming in here where he is the defending champion of this race.

The #4 driver had the last Toyota win here, #18 Kyle Busch. Kyle won in August of 2011. Kyle has 17 starts, one win and four Top 5’s.

He has found trouble in more than a couple of races and is looking to get back in Top 5 territory. This should be the place, he finished 4th in this race last year.

My #3 driver is the hottest driver over the last six weeks, #4 Kevin Harvick. Kevin is 12th in points overall but has scored the most in the last six weeks. Kevin has 26 starts, a win, and just five Top 5’s. But here is the more important stat – both his finishes last year were second places finishes. Never count out Kevin Harvick on a downforce track.

My #2 driver to watch is coming off a second place finish last week in the Pocanos, #2 Brad Keselowski. This is Brad’s home track but he has struggled a little bit here. He has nine starts, no wins, and just two Top 5’s. His two Top 5’s came through in the last three years. Brad should take every bit of that Penske power and have a huge finish.

The #1 driver is very anxiously looking for his first win of the year and the win that will lock him into The Chase, #20 Matt Kenseth. Matt struggled in his two races here for Joe Gibbs Racing but has 27 starts here in a Ford with two wins and 12 Top 5’s. If he can do at this track in a Toyota what he used to do in a Ford he could turn his luck around here in the Irish Hills and be back in Victory Lane.

Monday look for our preview of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 from Sonoma.
