AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY of SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

MARCH 23rd, 3PM CHARLOTTE TIME FOX TV

2 Miles, 14 Degrees of Banking

We are now four races into the year. We have raced on a Plate track, Flat track, Downforce track and a short track. I classify this as a Downforce track so it will be the first time we repeat a “track type.” On the minds of drivers will be handling: the battle between making your car go fast combined with “grip” or “downforce” will be paramount. The team that finds the best mix of speed and downforce can win this race. All three manufacturers look good at this early point in the season: Ford, Chevy, and Toyota each have win. Always looming on the horizon at California is fuel mileage. Because this track is wide and cautions few, sometimes it comes down to the team with the best fuel strategy. Interestingly five of the last six Auto Club Speedway races have been won by Chevrolet teams. Hendrick Motorsports has nine team wins here. Roush/Fenway is second with seven team wins. Will Chevy domination continue? We’ll know on Sunday.

Tuesday look for our Top 10 Drivers on Downforce Tracks.

TOP5 DRIVERS

FOOD CITY 500 from BRISTOL MOTOR SPEEDWAY

The number #5 driver to watch has won two of the last five races here, #2 Brad Keselowski. Brad has those two wins in just eight starts! Brad is #2 hottest over the last six races and at #2 in points, we know he is doing very well early on in the season.

My #4 driver is the most recent winner here, #20 Matt Kenseth. Matt has great stats here – 18 starts, three wins and 11 Top 5’s. His team, Joe Gibbs Racing, has won six of the last ten races here.

The #3 driver to watch has won five races here, #18 Kyle Busch. Kyle has 18 starts, five wins, and eight Top 5’s. Kyle was 2nd in this race last year and has the #1 Highest Average Finish here over the last seven years. Also, like Matt Kenseth, he drives for Joe Gibbs Racing.

The #2 pick has the second-highest average finish here, #88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. has 28 starts, one win, and seven Top 5’s. Interestingly, Jr. has 26 straight Top 20 finishes and is #1 hottest over the last six weeks.

My #1 driver is the #2 short track driver, #48 Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie has 22 starts with just one win and seven Top 5 finishes. The season may have just started, but Jimmie is #3 in points with only one Top 5. He is looking for a win and this could easily be the place to punch his ticket for the Chase for the Cup.
