We have the least amount of change this week than we have had all year long. You would think Talladega would have really changed things up a great deal but it was not the case. Hendrick Motorsports stays at #1 where they have been most of the year. The only change this week is Michael Waltrip Racing and Richard Petty Motorsports traded spots.

We are six races through the 10 race Chase for the Cup. #48 Jimmie Johnson and #20 Matt Kenseth are showing themselves as the cars the beat and there are only four points between them.. This is the last of the season’s six short track races. We know that short tracks bring on short tempers and with just four races to go in the season, the drivers are doing what they must to gather enough points to claim a successful season. We probably won’t see a lot of patience on the track – bump and run could be the phrase of the day, or worse yet, dump and run. An early departure from this race could spell doom for either of our two points leaders. Since Rusty Wallace won here in spring of 2004 in a Dodge, we have only seen two different manufacturers take the checkered flag – Chevrolet has had 14 wins and Toyota four. Chevy has won 75% of the races here in the last 10 years. Hendrick Motorsports accounts for 55% of those wins and their engine shop 65%. Will Hendrick Motorsports remain dominate? We’ll find out on Sunday.

Tuesday look for our Top 10 short track drivers.

TOP 5 DRIVERS

GOOD SAM CLUB 500:TALLADEGA

The #5 driver to watch finished 5th here earlier in the year, #48 Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie came limping into the Chase 29th hottest, but over the last six weeks has moved up to 4th hottest! He has 23 starts, two wins and six Top 5’s. Jimmie drives a Chevy and they have won 65% of the races in the last ten years.

My #4 pick is the #1 driver by best average finish, #2 Brad Keselowski. He is very happy to be racing where he has two wins in just nine starts with three Top 5 finishes. Brad is coming off a win last week at Charlotte and knowing he has done so well here in the past should help him forget his 15th place finish here earlier in the year.

My #3 driver is watching his Championship chances slowly fade away, #24 Jeff Gordon. Jeff has an unbelievable 41 starts, six wins and 15 Top 5’s. With just five races to go and sitting 36 points behind our leader, he has to have a big week every week for any chance at The Cup.

My #2 driver to watch has shaky stats here, #20 Matt Kenseth. In 27 starts Matt has only five Top 5’s. But he did get a win here in this race last year. It can’t feel good for all the championship contenders to know that the points’ leader is the defending champ of this race. Also he is #1 hottest over the last six weeks.

The #1 driver to watch is the #1 rated restrictor plate racer, #15 Clint Bowyer. Clint has 15 starts, two wins (both in the fall), and four Top 5’s. Those stats helped him to the 2nd best average finish here. A big finish here will go a long way to erasing his race at Richmond this year, which we would all like to do.

Not a great deal of change this week as six teams stay in place this week. Hendrick Motorsports stay at #1 where they have been most of the season. Joe Gibbs Racing also remain in place. Roush Fenway Racing and Richard Childress Racing trade spots. Furniture Row Racing stays at #4. Penske Racing stays just outside of the Top 5 at #6. Earnhardt/Ganassi Racing hold fast at #7. Richard Petty Motorsports and Michael Waltrip Racing trade places. As the bad news increases for MWR they continue week after week to drop in the rankings.  Stewart Haas Racing stays at #10.
