TOP 5 DRIVERS TO WATCH

NEW HAMPSHIRE MOTOR SPEEDWAY

The #5 pick will be throwing out the first pitch Monday at Fenway Park, #16 Greg Biffle. Greg won here in late 2008. Greg got that win in 19 starts and he came in the Top 5 five of those times. Greg is in the Top 5 of best average finishes at this track.

My #4 driver has the #1 best average finish here in the granite planet, #11 Denny Hamlin. Denny has 12 starts, a win here early in 2007 and has six total career Top 5’s. Denny had a rough start to the year, he is currently 19th hottest over the last six weeks. New Hampshire is a great place for Denny to bring that ranking up.

My #3 driver is rated #1 for me on the flat tracks, #48 Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie won in this race in 2010 and finished 3rd last year. Jimmie has 20 starts, three wins, and eight top 5’s. Keep in mind Jimmie is #3 hottest over the last six weeks.

My #2 pick is still fighting hard to make the Chase, #24 Jeff Gordon. Jeff has 34 starts, three wins and 15 Top 5’s here. His last win came in 1998 but his recent stats here are still impressive. Jeff’s last 13 races at the Magic Mile were all Top 15’s and six of those 13 were Top 5’s.

The #1 pick is another former 3-time winner at the Magic Mile, #14 Tony Stewart. Tony has 26 starts, three wins and 14 Top 5 finishes. Tony has been on a hot streak here – four of his last six races were Top 5’s and remember he finished #2 in this race last year and won in the autumn race.

Monday look our preview the Brickyard 400 from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

RACE PREVIEW:NEW HAMPSHIRE

LENOX 301

NEW HAMPSHIRE MOTOR SPEEDWAY

July 15th, 1PM on TNT TV

1.05 Miles, 7 Degrees of Banking

This week the drivers of the NASCAR circuit head north to the Granite State, to New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The track is located about 75 miles from downtown Boston and easily reached from Portland, ME and Providence, RI. This very flat 1.05 mile track always provides a very interesting race. Five owners are fighting for domination at this track. Hendrick Motorsports has five wins in the last ten years and Richard Childress Racing, Roush/Fenway Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing and Penske Racing all have three wins. A sixth team Stewart/Haas Racing are looking to join the party, as both drivers received wins last year. We know which car maker does well here, Chevrolet has won twelve of the last twenty races. With just eight races to go before the ten-race Chase for the Cup, some of the drivers will be getting even more aggressive than usual. Because of the flat, tight turns there is always beatin’ and bangin’ on this track. Which driver can lock himself into the Chase? Which owner will show some strength here in the Granite State? We’ll know on Sunday.

Tuesday look for our top 10 teams in advance of the Lenox Tools 301 from New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

TOP 5 DRIVERS:DAYTONA

Daytona COKE ZERO 400

The #5 driver won this race two years ago, #29 Kevin Harvick. Kevin has 22 starts, two wins and 5 total Top 5’s. Kevin is ranked #5 for me on restrictor plate tracks and four of his last five races here were top 10’s. When you think of plate tracks you have factor in his owner Richard Childress Racing.

My #4 pick has never won a race here, #11 Denny Hamlin. Denny has 13 starts, 0 wins, and 2 Top 5’s. Denny has always done well at the other plate track, Talladega, and is getting better here. He will sit out the Nationwide race tonight to rest his sore back, we’ll find out if that rest was enough on Saturday night.

My #3 driver to watch is the people’s choice to do well here, #88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. Dale did very well here early in his career getting two wins and nine top 5’s in his 25 starts. He comes in this week #2 in points, #2 hottest over the last six weeks, and he finished #2 here in February. Three of Dale’s last five races were all top 5’s.

My #2 driver has never won here either, #99 Carl Edwards. Carl has 15 starts, no wins, and four Top 5’s. Four of Carl’s last ten starts here were all Top 10’s and seven of those were top 10’s. Carl is 17th hottest over the last six weeks so he definitely needs a BIG finish here.

My #1 pick won here earlier in the year in the Daytona 500, #17 Matt Kenseth. Matt has 25 starts, two wins, and five Top 5’s. Interestingly two of the Top 5’s came in the last two races. Matt is just getting better here. Beside his Daytona 500 win in February he finished second in this race last year. With just three cars in the Roush/Fenway stable will we see Matt drafting with one of the Gibbs cars? We’ll find out under the lights on Saturday night.

Monday look for our preview of the Lenox Tools 301 from New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
